We live in dangerous times, and dangerous neighborhoods. Our neighborhoods are dangerous because criminals have guns. The single most dangerous precinct in New York City is in Brooklyn, the 75th.
How can we get guns out of the hands of criminals? I will not suggest more gun-control laws, because criminals do not obey laws. That’s what makes them criminals. Laws will not get guns out the hands of criminals.
I will not suggest that everyone get a gun to defend themselves. Many people are afraid of guns, or can’t take the time or effort to get the needed training, or don’t want to have guns in a home where there are children. We don’t have to turn Brooklyn into Switzerland, where every home is required to have a firearm.
Instead, I suggest a six-month, revolutionary, experimental plan in the two or three most dangerous precincts in Brooklyn. Let’s allow anyone in those precincts to carry a concealed gun who wants to (with a permit, of course). Let’s see whether crime goes down dramatically. Even if no one gets a gun, the criminals will still have to worry that their next victim might have one. If the neighboring precincts complain, “Don’t send your criminals here,” then we’ll know my plan is a good idea. If crime goes down dramatically, we can extend the plan to all of Brooklyn, and let the criminals go to Manhattan.
I call my plan revolutionary because the American Revolution started over a gun issue. A British contingent was marching on Concord, Massachusetts, to confiscate the guns and ammunition the colonists had stored there. On their way, they were met at Lexington by a small band of American patriots, and it was there in 1775 that was fired the first shot of the revolution, the shot heard round the world.
How can I be so sure my plan will work? It always has. Whenever a state or county has liberalized its concealed-carry laws, crime has dropped. Let’s fire our own shot heard round the city. Get me elected and let’s get my plan into action. Print out this flyer and distribute it in your neighborhood.
